Is Health Foods Cost/Effective?
Just wondering....
Has anyone questioned why you eat a $1.75 Power Bar instead of a $0.75 Snickers? Or paying more for soy milk over cow's milk? Health foods/organic foods are one of the fastest growing industries in America. I'm just wondering why people are as critical about the benefits of health food as hybrid vechicles? The arguements seem a lot alike. |

Sounds good to me. The fewer nasty chemicals used in making products that I eat, the better for my health. Most of the fruit and veggies I buy are organic. Most of the meat I eat is free-range grass-fed bison. I can even get organic eggs which have a high omega-3 fat content and organic "dorito"-type junk food. :)
I have also noticed that my organic fruits and veggies last a few days longer in the fridge than the non-organic ones before they start to spoil. I have no explanation for this. |
Re: Is Health Foods Cost/Effective?
If it's not already obvious - people don't needle you about buying from a Health Food store like they do on hybrids about saving money.

Yeah, but when you're sitting down on a park bench next to your HCH2 eating an organic apple, the hybrid is a lot more obvious than the apple :)
Maybe I should buy some "organic" stickers from and plaster them over my lunch bag. |

Read "Fast Food Nation"... I just finished it the other day and I will be staying away from a lot of foods. Gives me the chills after reading it. Which will probably explain why people are willing to spend more for organic food.

I'd it's as graphic as Upton Sinclar's The Jungle it has to be scary. |
Re: Is Health Foods Cost/Effective?
Yeup... read that in high school, i don't think I ate beef for about a year. The sad thing is that not much has changed since "The Jungle" (per meat packing industry).

Without reading Fast Food Nation the problem seems to be:

Protein, such as meat, chicken and fish, is the most expensive food by portion size, but there are low-cost proteins such as beans and eggs. The cost of eating healthy foods has been the subject of growing debate as experts warn Americans about the dangers of obesity.
