2009 FEH with Stuck Fuel Guage

Hi All-
New poster here. Have a 2009 FEH Limited with ~65K miles.

Filled up with gas on Friday night and the gauge only comes up to just over half. The first time I noticed, the MTE was ~160. Subsequent checks have shown 230 or so. The MTE moves down while I am driving.

So far, this is what I have tried:
disconnected battery overnight - no change
entered the engineering mode and found the following fuel related items (this at about 75mi on this tank):
- Fuel Level A/D 95
- Fuel Level FLPS input 144
- Fuel Level FILT FLPS input 144
- Fuel Level DC 748
- Fuel Level Init Ref 0590
- Added about 40mi more and only item changed was the Init Ref to 0490

Also in ENG mode I see the DTC of E023 but I cant find what that means.

Concerned its the fuel sending unit but not sure how to tell for sure.

Next plans include waiting a few to see what happens when its actually

Distance to empty uses the same signal as is used for the gauge (which is why they're both annoyingly inaccurate). So unless the needle is sticking they should agree with each other. This is the first time I've heard of this problem with the FEH, so unfortunately there won't be a heap of advice based on experience.

Re: 2009 FEH with Stuck Fuel Guage

Thanks xspirit - the concern is not the DTE per se as that value seems to agree with the guage level. Its more as to what causes the fuel gauge to get stuck and how to determine what is the source.

From some other research, the FIPS values in ENG mode seem to align to the gauge/DTE with 254 = full tank.

So I am suspecting the sending unit but looking for a way to confirm before I start buying parts.

If you don't have a factory service manual, this might be a worthwhile time to get one. Even if it doesn't have the answer, it can help you navigate the problem and perhaps figure it out using logic.

Re: 2009 FEH with Stuck Fuel Guage

I did have a similar thing happen in my 2009 FEH. I acquired it in January and have done 29 fill-ups since then. This happened exactly once.

My usual routine is to fill-up then, before starting the engine, reset the trip odometers and mileage gauge. This one time, trying to save some time, I did the resets while the pump was still running (before the tank was full). It may have been coincidence, but for the remainder for that tank the fuel gauge was off. It originally showed slightly above half a tank (despite my having filled it).

The problem disappeared on the next fill-up, when I want back to my usual routine.

Perhaps unrelated to what you're seeing, but odd.
