Thanks for the update. Please report back what they find.

Re: 2010 Ford Escape Hybrid No Start/No Crank DTC P0AFA-16
The dealer is recommending to replace the PCM first. If that doesn't fix the problem, they are suggesting that the TCM is probably at fault.

Re: 2010 Ford Escape Hybrid No Start/No Crank DTC P0AFA-16
Do you have a local independent shop that works on hybrids? I would want a 2nd opinion before spending much money at the dealer. My experience with Ford service on my FEH has been bad, they don't have the hybrid expertise to actually diagnose a problem before starting to replace parts.

Re: 2010 Ford Escape Hybrid No Start/No Crank DTC P0AFA-16
It was at an independant shop first (that works on hybrids) but they were not confident in their opinion so they suggested a Ford dealer. One of the local dealers does have experienced techs who have worked on city vehicles. I cannot afford to replace the TCM because it seems to be internal to the eCVT and replacing it even with a used one is probably cost-prohibitive. Some independants who work on the FEH are unable to program the PCM so it has to go to be towed to a dealer for that anyway. The ongoing PCM/TCM issues in some of these vehicles should be part of a safety recall or customer satisfaction program. Thank you for your input and beware of used, out-of-warranty Ford Escape Hybrid's - they can and will leave you stranded!

Re: 2010 Ford Escape Hybrid No Start/No Crank DTC P0AFA-16
Thankfully, the PCM replacement appears to have worked. The Hippo has been driven a number of times flawlessly although I have not checked for codes or done a full FORScan on the system yet. Cost was a new PCM, 4 hours of dealer time for diagnostics, repair and programming as well as a new 12V battery. Hats off to the tech and service staff at Eastgate Ford in Hamilton, Ontario. The service department was rooting for this to work for us and it did. A bad TCM (transmission control module) would have doomed the vehicle since it's part of the eCVT which is not economic for me to fix. That said, used "insurance grade" eCVT's with low mileage are quite available in the U.S. for about $US1400 plus shipping and labour to install but I am up here in the the Great Lakes rustbelt region of Canada where its not a good idea to spend too much money on a vehicle that's over 10 model years old. The vehicle AC is also not working. If anyone has any thoughts on how to cool this Hippo, let me know.

Re: 2010 Ford Escape Hybrid No Start/No Crank DTC P0AFA-16
The following is a download of various tests and data from Hippo The Hybrid post PCM replacement. I have not reset any pre-existing DTCs yet so the old values can be saved. I ran a number of tests including PCM (powertrain), ACC (climate control) and BCM (battery) module tests. We are roughly 1000km post repair and the vehicle seems to be running well with no known glitches. No errors present on instrument panel including no wrench symbol, no CEL, no SSN (Stop safely now) . Average fuel economy at 6.5 litres/100km. Tires at 40 psi. AC does not work. When I get a chance, I will clear the old codes and rerun some tests. Results still obtained from FORSCAN (laptop version) using a PANLONG OBDII Diagnostic Scanner for iOS and Android. Model PL-W03. Other known issues are a leaking windshield washer reservoir (possibly an o-ring) and a damaged rear defroster grid (multiple scratches).

Re: 2010 Ford Escape Hybrid No Start/No Crank DTC P0AFA-16
12 mo follow up. The PCM replacement with a rebuilt Ford supplied unit has been successful, so far. No problems with the power train system post replacement including start/stop. I recently ran FORSCAN and i noted nothing out of the ordinary that I could see including state of charge, min/max charge, battery cell differentials, etc. Now that fair weather has returned, average fuel economy is approx 6.8 litres per 100, better than the 8.5 litres per average in the winter. It is certainly a fair weather bird.

Re: 2010 Ford Escape Hybrid No Start/No Crank DTC P0AFA-16
25 mo follow up. The PCM replacement with a rebuilt Ford supplied unit installed by a local hybrid knowledgeable Ford dealer has still been successful, so far. No problems with the power train system post replacement including start/stop. I recently ran another FORSCAN and i noted nothing out of the ordinary that I could see including state of charge, min/max charge, battery cell differentials, etc. in fair weather, average fuel economy is still approx 6.8 litres per 100, better than the 8.5 litres per average in the winter. It is confirmed to be a fair weather bird.

Re: 2010 Ford Escape Hybrid No Start/No Crank DTC P0AFA-16
34 month follow-up. No noticeable issues with the PCM system and the Ford 12V replacement battery in the engine compartment has been reliable so far in winter and summer. No error codes on dash and drives normally. I have not run a FORSCAN recently but plan to do so when the weather warms up. Fuel economy is running about 8.5 l/100 km this winter. The winter tires are probably taking a 5%+ hit on fuel economy.
