Then how would an '08 FEH protect its MG2 from over-spin in a loss of traction situation?

All FEH's are protected from MG2 over-spin by engine start-up. You can't exceed 40mph in the '05 - '09 FEH's without engine start-up. MG1 will spin the engine in the FEH's newer than the '09 to protect MG2 for EV speeds higher than 40mph.
