Why the engine oil in Canada is different?

I checked the manual and in US the engine oil is synthetic oil, but in Canada the engine oil is premium motor oil. The interval of maintenance in both countries is the exact same.

Is it because Canada is colder or the car hardware is different than in US? My car is a USA car (I bought it from USA and the speed is in large font miles instead of Km), should I follow USA engine oil specs or Canadian ones?

I just don't get it why different type oil for Canada for same car? I can easily find synthetical oil in Canadian stores....

I'm in North Dakota and can see no reason for not using synthetic oil, if nothing else for the cold start cranking improvement. It's possible you're further north and need it more.

I can only speculate that Cafe or other US regulations make it advantageous to use synthetic in the US and possibly a cost saving measure for CA.

FWIW, Europeans have used synthetic oil from the factory much longer than the US.

Sphinx88 - what year/model is your hybrid vehicle?
OEM oil in most years of the FEH has been a synthetic BLEND.

Thank you Rick and Glenn.

Mine is a 2008 4WD. I live in Toronto and it is actually more southern than some cities in US, Toronto is southern than WA, MT, ND, MN, WI and MI, especially more Southern than in Alaska. :O

That's why I said, "It's possible you're further north...".

Both Canada and the U.S. recommend synthetic or semi-synthetic motor oils. The "Premium" would be the full synthetic recommended by Ford for cold climates.

Some oil suppliers say they can meet the Ford spec's with a conventional motor oil, but I question it.

So does synthetic oil really have some problems of starting when it is extremly cold?
:P

Not at all. See the Advantages/Disadvantages of synthetic oil here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synthetic_oil
