Re: Confessions of a Crazy hypermiler...

For the record I consider pushing cheating as well. The reason for pusing in the first place was that the first part of the tank the gate was left open so I could roll into a spot with no need to push. Right in the middle of the tank they turned the gate on and I just couldn't see restarting the car to go 15 feet or so.

My current tank isn't quite as good as bad luck and rain have kept the numbers down to the low eighties. Since I will not earn RJ's respect until I do one his way, this next tank will not be pushed and will be nearly empty when filled. I'm not about to drive around with zero bars so maybe I'll fill up at one or two bars. That will hafta be close enough.

It is going to be a while since empting the tank will take a month and a half or two.

For the record, the "dude" has my respect. He can post a "tank" as well as anyone when he wants to. He will find as he posts a 900+ mile tank that he simply will do without A/C for a longer period, say the 2 months it will take him. He will also become more extreme to keep the mpg display up, and he will marvel at the wonder of only stopping at a gas pump once every month or two.

now i don't feel so bad anymore when i try to get a couple of km/h backwards so that i can bump start in reverse instead of using the starter.

Barely maintaining my 50 mpg tank, but I yet have to get out in stop and go traffic and push ;) now that's hardcore.

get some fireworks rockets . . . or some of those F-series model rocket engines
Now that draws a picture in the mind.

Great FE, and fantastic effects as well!
Steve....Why do you have 50 1" holes across your rear bumper?

This is choice!

Personally I don't consider an occasional leg-nudge as cheating, or FAS.
One could carry the point to parking in a favorable spot and walking further as cheating, coasting or really any variation to the publics "normal" as cheating.

Honestly, I wish I could achieve Lakedude's numbers but haven't for one reason or another, or Waynes's (of course) and a number of folks either.
Yep I'm pretty extreme as well to get my own numbers.
I wouldn't have those results without listening carefully to others who do better than I.

If someone wants to install an auxillary 'creeper' motor, fine by me. Of course the NHW20 Prius has a built-in one, called EV mode.

So what if someone get's out and pushes the car? Perhaps they should just make the floor board removable so they can do a "Flintstone."

Alternatively, they could get an Acme Inc, crank operated, boot terminated pole that fits in the window. The delux version has two poles. The supercharged version has three. Just turn the crank and move forward (soon to be offered by JC Whitney along with the fuel line magnet.)

Wait, wait, no! Use a small team of dogs in the trunk. Just pop the trunk and a pack of Jack Russel Terriers pull the car (if you need reverse.) Ok, suspend a bunny rabbit toy on a pole in front of the car. WARNING: do not use if there are squrrels around.

Better yet, in Huntsville we have this guy who builds hybrid rocket engines for bicycles . . . or get some fireworks rockets . . . or some of those F-series model rocket engines.

Bob Wilson

I think bob is on to something. ......

i myself am going to hypermile in my ford escort that i bought for $2000 bucks.

Wouldnt it be great if we could get 50 + mpg in regular gas cars?

Then all who read can just apply the 'hypermiling ' techniques to their cars instead of shelling out all this money for these high priced hybrids.

:)

Honestly? I think the reason you don't get Lakedude's numbers is because you have a CVT rather than the MT. I think the MT makes a huge difference. It gives us real extremists the ultimate flexibility to experiment and be...the most extreme.

Bob, funny stuff!

Tomdude, you can of course absolutely get fantastic mileage without needing a fancy new hybrid. As you say a used Escort/Civic/whatever with a ScanGauge could do just fine.

Look at what Xcel gets in his non-hybrid Accord!

I tend to agree.

I agreed with most of the things you said. However, I am puzzled by the "cheating" comment. If I click on your profile, the first thing that jumps out at me is that you have two entries for one car. The second is that your MO is conserving money and natural resources. By lakedude pushing his car, he is conserving his money and natural resources. Personally, I would be more inclined to say that leaving the car at home during bad weather would be cheating. I guess the question for all of us is: Are we trying to conserve money and resources, or are we just playing a game?

For myself it's money and a game I play.
