Ford Gives Up - Touts "Fun per Gallon"

This is an actual ad that runs regularly here in Southern California:

Oh sure you could be saving the environment, but how much fun per gallon could you be getting? Good point Ford, and I think pyromaniacs would agree a lot more fun could be had with a gallon of gas.

I suppose they could pay their factory workers in Itchy & Scratchy money. Then the workers could have more *fun* per paycheck...
Homer: One adult and four children.
Woman: Would you like to buy some Itchy and Scratchy Money?
Homer: What's that?
Woman: Well it's money that's made just for the park. It works just
like regular money, but it's, er..."fun".
Bart: Do it, Dad.
Homer: Well, OK, if it's fun...let's see, uh...I'll take $1100 worth.
[he walks in, sees all the signs: "No I&S Money", "We Don't Take
Itchy and Scratchy Money", etc.]
Aw!

Re: Ford Gives Up - Touts "Fun per Gallon"

I haven't seen the ad but am wondering how it actually plays out. Is the feel of it as if Ford products are just more fun than compeditors, or is it that more gallons consumed = more fun?

If they claim Ford provides more fun per gallon I don't have a problem with it.
If it's fun=consumption then big problem.
I could also make a claim that hybrid cars are more fun per gallon.
Again, I haven't seen the ad.

I have not seen it either, but what's been mentioned here suggests typical Detroit appeals to emotions and not addressing the quality of the product.

Hmmm this analysis is very savvy but all a fair bit more serious than the topic deserves - I just got a laugh out of the absurd marketing term they're using and posted it.

I can watch for the commercial again but I'm pretty sure the commercial is just like any other - clips of cars driving with a voiceover about style and avoiding stating any MPG numbers, and then that very entertaining screen is the last 5 seconds or so.
