HCH 1 - P1433 and P0420

Honda Dealer gave me these codes:

for the P1433 (IMA Battery) I was going to try a grid charger from Hybrid Automotive.

for the P0420 how do I know which catalytic converter is bad? I believe there are 2?

Last month Auto Zone said I had codes for bad O2 sensor. I ran a can of Sea Foam through gas tank and now those codes are gone. Just showing the two codes above now.

Overall the 05 Civic runs good. IMA battery drains fast but that's about it.

Any input/thoughts?

My biggest question is which converter is bad?

If memory serves there was a problem with the software on some of these cars so that they gave spurious catalytic converter bad errors. I don't recall the details but if you search you can find it. I think there was a software update for the motor controller that fixed this. So before you shell out any money, verify that your engine control unit does not have the old buggy software.

Here, this has some information:

Like p_c said, there is an update to correct certain cat codes. Check with the dealer.

A grid charger is worth a try to address the P1433.

P0420 is the upper cat.

Good luck,

Steve

Re: HCH 1 - P1433 and P0420

The dealer invoice said PGM-FI Version checked. I assume this is the software in question?

The service manager checked with the technician today and said there is only 1 CAT (more confusion).

I called Honda Corporate. They are reviewing if they will still help me with 166,000k miles. I also filed a formal complaint against the dealer for other customer service issues. I should hear from the corporate office tomorrow. I think they looked at the records and didn't see any IMA or CAT repairs so they may cover it (not holding my breath).

I'll post updates as they come in. Thanks for the input so far.
