Is greenhybrid near death?

The 'Discuss' opening page has been dominated by two Prius news stories without any update for nearly 2-1/2 months.

Either...
1. Toyota has slipped some $$$ to this site, or
2. There is some inherent favoritism by the management toward Toyota, or
3. There has been no noteworthy news from any other manufacturer, or
4. Captain GreenHybrid has fallen asleep at the helm, leaving the site to die a peaceful death.

At any rate, the site is a poor shadow of its former self – sad to see.

Activity is directly proportional to the price of gasoline.

Its not as busy ( or as fast in response time ) as 8thCivic.com.
I still like the discussions here.

I wonder how many lurkers there are on this board.

I lurked here for 6 weeks before I bought my 2007 HCH II. It did help me validate what I wanted to check before buying a Used HCH-I or HCH-II.

I would not have traded for a newer except the 2009 has VSA and rear disk brakes. Two options I really wanted. I got to use a HCH-II for 5 months for less than $1000. not bad.

Gotta thank the moderators. They kicked out the people that made this board rock with good info and tips galore. Hell ya, I used to come back like an addict every hour just to learn a bit more but then when they kicked out the last contributor that marked the beginning of the slide down the hill.

Too bad. now its just matter of time.

Re: Is greenhybrid near death?

The Captain jumped ship.

I never really looked at the articles here anyway; usually I read the ones over at cleanmpg.com
Here I tend to follow the forums more, especially the Honda sections. People try to help one another when they have info or ideas to share, so I appreciate that. The way I figure it is the value of the website is in the member participation.

The thing that really has gone to pot is the database. I liked the old one, although there were problems with cars being in the wrong section (HCHI versus HCHII), but the new "garage" is unorganized and not user-friendly.
I'm just keeping my data in a personal logbook for now. (Actually, I just noticed that the old database still accepts input, so I'm just going to keep logging my tanks in that way. It just looks clearer than the new layout.)

PS: I agree with Kevin.

Re: Is greenhybrid near death?

I find 8thCivic to be useful sometimes but often immature/hostile. Vtec.com is slow and cumbersome. InsightCentral is limited to... Insights, but a nice tech-savvy group (Insight I owners). Edmunds... too difficult to navigate. CleanMPG, not much participation.

This was a wonderful site... why were people kicked off? Why was the mileage database ruined? Why are the news stories not updated? I, too, spent hours here and now coming back, I can't believe how it's changed. Where is the reunion committee?

Re: Is greenhybrid near death?

By the way... as I cruise the Honda-related forums and read the excitement about the 2010 Insight, it makes me wish that we still had the camaraderie that existed when the HCHII was first introduced. No energized Civic Hybrid forum exists now, and yet I believe this underdog hybrid is the best-of-the-best and now a better value than ever. I've had my 2009 HCHII for only a month now, yet feel dumb expressing my excitement here and wanting to talk about it with others who are also getting their new cars and discovering the same. It's like... another Civic Hybrid.. ho-hum.

Heck if I know. I was just comparing the old database versus the new, and there's so much weirdness about the new one that it leaves one speechless. I still can't figure out how the hell to add a tank in there. So I continue on in the old database...

As for the other stuff, I'm guessing it was politics, power struggles, and people not getting along respectfully and just agreeing to disagree when necessary.

PS: Steven, don't feel dumb expressing your excitement about the 2009 HCHII. It's good to hear about the improvements that have evolved over the years with these cars. I can't afford a newer model right now, but it's helpful to learn what others have to say about all the newer model hybrids, and I'm sure that info will come into play someday when I do have to choose a newer car.

The Ford Escape Hybrid section continues to have a large and active discussion forum.

I guess the people were not really kicked off.
but you bad mouth those who really contribute to the community cause you don't like the help they give and then try to make them look bad at every turn..... then why the heck would they hang around GH? The people who give good help to the community don't come here to fight..... but if we make there job harder they also don't wait to get kicked out. we just lose them for good.

I hope not (meaning the ones who did the bad-mouthing, that is).

In other news, I finally figured out how to add a tank to the "garage" database. So I added my last 2 tanks. What does it do?
Totally removed my car from the "garage".

fine. I have my little black book.

Edit: oh I found my car. When I specified that it was a Honda Civic Hybrid, it moved me from one of the 30-something Civic sections to one of the others. Sheesh.

Jason, the founder of GH, has opened a new site. If you are keen to know then you will find it.

Thanks for the link to that thread, AND the good clue about Jason's new site. I never would have seen it, as I keep my participation to the model-specific sub-forums mostly. So then, it's NOT just my imagination, and there is more than coincidence to the litany of things going wrong at greenhybrid.

this new site?

maybe I'm blind but i see nothin special at that site this Jason created. I see the same people that are no help, but there's none of the good people I would like see return to GH. :(

This morning I got a pm from someone who told me about the GH history and man it ain't good. I say this myhybirdcar is another dead-end cause the same hands are on deck at that site too.

Re: Is greenhybrid near death?

It's hard to start a new site these days because it's hard to get a critical mass of people to migrate to them. They die from lack of participation. The search engines and long history favor newer and better-funded established sites, even though they may now suck. Would rather hope that some savvy mega-site owner might have the wisdom to hire one or more of the smarter 'good guys' to really rework/enhance an old-name site like this one... before it's too late.

Well Kevin, become one of those people!!! We can still help by informing each other of how things turn out, and how the problem was corrected. Only so many electronic experts, and good engineers and Hybrid tech. out there, but new ones will show up! May take awhile, but you guys are doing OK!!! Hal

If anyone is up to the task on helping out here at GH, be sure to send me a PM.

This is a hybrid community, and having some help on managing the boards would be great.

IB knows about the inconsistencies int he database. We should be hearing more from them soon.

Back in early 2006 the activity here was ballpark with PriusChat (i.e. robust as in at least 10x the activity than the present). Even before Jason sold the site, he was eschewing "fringe hypermilers" as an impediment to growth. This intensified later on when a recent moderator muzzled hypermilers by liberally accessing infraction points...this is why after losing a discussion with msantos at PC, he took the discussion to GH...at least eight PMs in support of msantos in the face of this bullying. His attack of Wayne sounded a lot more like an autobiography of his agenda the last three years at GH - not Wayne. Somehow, his siege of hypermilers (including members that may have been shopping for hybrids), and earlier dissing the Honda IMA system as not a real hybrid was forum-building, but escapes me as to how. That Manuel had a pleasant talk with him during HybridFest 2008, makes his attack thread on him all the more deplorable. Strange priorities - spam can sit here for hours. Another interesting thought: Wayne was the most active poster with quite a few hypermilers at GHs peak.

I had built many polls and linked many articles in 2004-05 until along with others, I was unwelcome, so we went elsewhere to a site that just exceeded GH in total posts. You be the judge if purging hypermilers benefited GH.

I'm a member of about five green forums and this is the ONLY one I was treated like a pariah - strange for a site named GreenHybrid...this would be more typical of a racing forum, but this is the most hostile site towards hypermilers on the net. No, I don't expect everybody to hypermile or eco-drive, it's safer to promote speeding here....I was stalked by a HiHi member that can't even get up to the new EPA.

In the two years of hypermiling articles, it's obvious that what follows in the reader's comments, writers, and sadly at GH is not a discussion, but ventings by defensive speeders...the basher often hardly knows what it is and rarely proficient at it. I have rarely seen such defensive actions....how often do people scream like that when they are right?

The recent GH staff with the exception of Eric is unfriendly to hostile towards me and other hypermilers. Check out this sig - how does that look on GH with a sig like that standing for months? BTW, when Jason was promoting his new site at PriusChat, I pointed out the sig and ignored it while responding "mistakes were made"....an apology and simple gesture like changing the sig when he had the authority would have enhanced his credibility....maybe he wanted to assure everybody little would change at his new site.

Even though I am the most hated by many here, what probably enrages them now is I've been very quiet while they have made it a hypermiler-free forum and this is the result. They got their wish.

Re: Delta

Some of the points you mentioned above are accurate, and I've expressed regret to you and others. However, some of your other points are sadly misleading and insulting. If you, or anyone else, would like to discuss these matters privately, I would be happy to do so. I no longer own GreenHybrid and it would not be appropriate for us to carry this on here.

stevenvillatoro 04-28-2009 07:07 PM

Re: Is greenhybrid near death?

History and personalities aside, the 'bones' are here to have this be an excellent site. History is history, and probably should be left as... history. The question is how to get from Point A to Point B. I don't have a clue as to who owns or runs greenhybrid, except for a thoughtful note on an unrelated matter from user 'ericbecky.' But, I'm certain that the owners would want success and growth – I hope it wouldn't sound too idealistic to say that if we had some constructive conversations, NOT based on whatever happened in the past, but on what we want to create – there MIGHT be an opening for something good to happen. I started this thread ONLY because I noticed the stagnancy in the pages and lack of participation from the old days. I had no idea what lay underneath. But I do know that any 'post-game' analysis will NOT lead us to any desirable future. Is there anything in the management or its motives that inherently keeps this site stuck? Let's put all the cards on the table, and then get to work. I loved this place, and would like to see it flourish again with healthy thought, not animosity and resentment. I'm just a guy with a new car who wants to have fun and talk about my new car with similar people. My friend Melinda taught me, "Don't fix the bad, just add more good."

Delta Flyer 04-28-2009 07:10 PM

Re: Is greenhybrid near death?

I agree - some fence-fixing needed to be conducted privately some time ago.

stevenvillatoro,
You said a mouthful right there.
Good to hear that there are people out there with positive attitudes.

Right now there are two moderators still officially listed, myself and Pravus Prime. Technically I'm an admin, but overall things like the database, front page articles, and garage are out of my "jurisdiction". :-) Those items are in Internet Brands realm.

The site is "owned" by Internet Brands, but of course it is the community that really makes or breaks the site.
