When there are 1.71 gallons left of that 12.4, that's when the light comes on the dash.

So the fuel warning light comes on and the fuel guage indicator should be close to empty at 10.69 gallons approximately-assuming the tank is full but not the neck.
Hum...Merits some self research

I also tested this out last night. After all of the fuel bars disappeared I drove another 25-30 miles. When I filled up my car only held 10.75 gallons. So with a 12.4 tank, I would have about 1.6 gallons left in the tank. But I must say I was nervous on the interstate with no fuel bars---I would have hated to run dry!!

By the way I went 602.5 miles on this tank!!! woohoo, my first 56 mpg.

Yeah, after absorbing the aggregate opinion here, I am pretty much running my car down to 0 bars consistently. She still only takes 11 to 11.2 gallons... I don't really believe there is harm to the car in running on low fuel levels, and every second I don't spend waiting in line for NJ full-serve (albeit cheap) gas is a second I can spend on worthwhile endeavors. Such as recycling. Or playing Xbox. Plus every 600+ mile tank just feels wonderful and smuggifying.

Exact thing happened to me this past weekend. I was on I-68, going up and down some good sized hills (AKA The Appalacians). Going up them was giving me 20 mpg or so during the ascents. I make it up on the down slopes when I shut off the fuel injectors and have the chance to recharge my battery. Based on my calculations, I would have another 100 miles at least for my average mpg, but at this point if I was in the 20s or lower, it was probably a lot lower...So I filled up, not knowing when the next gas station was and how many more climbs I had to do, and even though I had been driving a bit with only 0 bars, it still only took 10.1 gallons....

I'm consistently getting mileage (well, as consistently as three tanks can tell me so far) that will give me over 600 mile tanks. No doubt due to my mainly interstate use of the Civic. However, depending on how the schedule falls I may or may not actually make it to an actual 600 gallon tank, because my commute is about 80 miles each way I'm not going to get on the highway in the morning with only one bar on the fuel meter - I'll just fill up in the morning and be at 590 miles.

Sure, I could stop in the middle of the commute to fuel up I suppose, but that's not really an efficient use of time.
