Re: roof rack for Insight

I found this website that looked interesting. It's a roof rack for bikes and it has to be modified to fit the Insight. If you go to their home page, though, it has drop downs to select the 2010 Insight and 2 other Thule racks come up as options. Like you mentioned, though, Thule has not officially approved a rack yet.

Here is an idea for you, for $134 + shipping, you can purchase a bolt on trailer hitch form etrailer.com. Then find you a small (really small) trailer from like northern tools or jc whitney or whereever. Rig it to carry your kayak. This will hopefully be less wind resistance than with the kayak on top of the car. The big down side here is that the Honda manual threatens that if you pull a trailer, you "may void your warranty". It also list the trailer pully capacity as 0 lbs.

I thought about getting a hitch for the car and pull a small trailer but that would void my warranty and I did purchase the 100,000 mile warranty. One of the problems is you can not hook up lights to the wiring harness. The Insight has LED taillights and they use very little power. Trailer lights would burn up the car's wiring. I will wait for either Thule or Yakima to get a fit for the car. All Insight owners should contact both Thule and Yakima to get moving on a fit for the Insight. They allready have a fit for the Prius.

You would also need a Circuit Protector to hook up the lights: http://www.etrailer.com/pc-VWH~119176.htm

It "senses" the power being applied to the brake lights, but takes the current from a different power circuit to light up the trailer lights. BTW, you will need to add that other power circuit.

I decided not to wait for Thule or Yakima. Several of the kayak places I went to suggested using Sherpak. I bought it for $80 and it works great. It takes about 3 minutes to install and remove. It supports my Hurricane Santee 140T (52 lbs) with no problem.

You might try Kayak Rack Shops. They stock five different manufacturers so it's easy to check a bunch of kayak racks out all at one place. They also hook into THULE & Yakima fit guides. Here's a link to their page with all the kayak racks: http://www.kayakrackshops.com/grouprackskayak.html
