Lexus Debuts 2008 LS 600h L: World's First Full Hybrid V8 Luxury Sedan

Lexus unveiled the all-new 2008 LS 600h L hybrid luxury sedan at a press conference today at the 2006 New York International Automobile Show. Scheduled to arrive in Spring 2007, the all-wheel-drive LS 600h L will be the world's first vehicle to feature a full hybrid V8 powertrain.

Jason,

For the first time, I'm reading about a 'boat' that I'd like to own. The variable ratio steering and collision avoidance are things to covet. This Lexus is to a Hummer what Pavarotti is to bluegrass . . . totally over the top.

Can we get it with adaptive armor?

If only they made an Urban Assault model, with depleted-uranium armor and top-mounted rotary cannons!

When are they going to offer a bolt-on turbojet? :P

Umm....Oldsmobile is defunct (you're old enough to get that one...) ;)

Just ran across the 'expected' price - $125,000. Funny how Lexus' pricing structure has changed over the years - first they were 60% of the cost of a M-B. Then it went to 80%. Now they're at parity

Still doesn't compare to a Maybach, though ;)

Would the DIY rocket-car be considered the FIRST hybrid???

C'mon, we can laugh or roll our eyes all we want, but when a vehicle is described as having "immense power" and "jaw-dropping engine performance" it warrants a test drive in my book!

You knew it was only a matter of when, not IF, a vehicle like this would be designed. Now we can sit back and wait for the Hummer Hx, the four ton beast that gets an AMAZING 15 mpg!

Well, I just don't see how a hybrid truck that costs $125,000 is going to make any REAL positive difference in the ecology or in oil dependency. After all, maybe 1 in 50,000 Americans could even AFFORD the vehicle, and the folks in that economic bracket are greedy, wasteful, and capricious (or they would never have pursued that kind of wealth in the first place.)

I think Honda and Toyota have it right: make mainstream hybrids at the $25k price point that also are small enough to benefit from hybridization while being still large enough to not be derided as an Econobox.

(Side note: it would be *great* if a Hummer could get 15 MPG. They get about 4 MPG now. I guess when gas hits $3.99/gal, it'll be $1/mile to drive it. Nice!)

It would be nice for the EPA to list the H1 and H2.

The next quote is the the number of earths required for your lifestyle if everyone in the world lived like you. I think it's a crude estimate - just like predicting the oil reserves (which go up and up, but so does the consumption....)

According to http://www.footprintnetwork.org/ , my footprint was 6.1. :omg:

But what is its MPG? "Best In Class" V8 fuel economy might not be saying much.

Not sure where you got the 4mpg from, though I don't doubt someoen coudl get that low with a crazy driving style. A friend of mine though with an H1 and an aftermarket replacement gasoline engine averages about 10, has achieved as high as 12.5 on a tank. His friend with a turbodiesel achieves about 13, and once a tank over 15. Offroad though the gas H1 only gets about 3-4, going up unpaved 100% grades and such. The diesel driver achieves about 6-7 in the same conditions as it doesn't need to rev as fast to hit peak torque. Their driving styles though happen to be somewhat more conservative than average though, and I woudln't be surprised if the H2 gets worse mileage than the H1, either.
