Just an update on my 03 HCH pack recond'ing/rebalancing project. Everything is going well (50MPG still!) except that the IMA lamp is on again. This happened during last summer while I was driving 60mph on I-95. The cells have not done well since then. I have been diligently charging up the pack with the external charger system I built and this seems to help a lot, but as soon as I accel to a highway speed again the IMA lamp is on again. It seems that the benefits of recond'ing of the cells was only temporary and the cell chemistry will continue to mess up over time (just like with any other battery!) This is something the rest of you should keep in mind when buying a used hybrid, or when buying a recond'ed battery pack. The cells will continue to degrade, and apparently degrade faster in hot driving conditions. I have also received many emails from used HCH owners with sad tales to tell. The only really bright part of the tale is that some battery retailers are now offering to re-cell your pack (if you disassemble it for them) for about $1000.00. For this price you get NEW 10,000mAh NiMh cells instead of Honda's cheap 6400 mAh cells. No warranty though. But since Honda now wants $3600 with a 1 year warranty, a $1000 isnt so bad a deal as long as you can do the bolt turning yourself.

    Mike-

I was reading your post from March regarding IMA battery replacement. There were two codes being thrown, P1600 and P1433, deterioration to the IMA battery. I have the battery out of the car and sitting in the den. But I'm at a loss of what to do next in regards to recondition the sub packs. Also, what is the name of the charger that is required to test and recondition the sub packs. I would greatly appreciate your advice because a couple hundred is a lot better than $3500 is what Honda quoted me. Please feel free to contact me directly at [email protected]

    Thanks,
    Bruce

Hi, I read one of your posts about rebuilding/balancing a hybrid battery pack. I'm attempting to do so now but was getting some weird data. Mind if I ask a question?
