2006 MMH oil filter

I cannot find the oil filter. Crazy! Please point me in the right direction.
I've been working on cars for 30+ years and feel like an idiot!

Don't! - Feel like an idiot. It took me a while to locate one in a car with similar filter the first time. - And I've been under cars for a while too...

The filter is the more modern cassette-type (sorry, don't know the correct term for it in english) filter. That is one without the familiar metal housing. On the Mariner it's located at the very front of the engine, about the centerline of the car. It's on plain view when you kneel in front of your car. It is a round black plastic cap you unscrew to change the filter in the case. With this you just change the filter, not the housing. Which makes sense, and saves the planet. =)
