Re: 4WD Lockup/Disable

Followup: had alot of rain out here last week... gully washer type rain. Drove up a portion of my driveway that is kind of steep. Wheels spun heavily in the mud. No indication of problems with the...

Re: Replacement of Aux. Coolant Pump?

I replaced my OEM MECS pump at about 51,000 miles on spec since I was seeing entries in here about it failing. Ford has a new design pump. If you order one (~$180 several years ago) you should get...

Re: 4WD Lockup/Disable

Final update: Road test today (4/25). Had several inches of snow this morning up here in Wyoming. Took it out on the road and was able to verify that the rear axle wheels are responding properly to...

Re: Brake caliper piston stuck

You can't use a C-clamp to back in the piston. Get a brake caliper cube & rotate it in with a 3/8" drive ratchet wrench.

Re: 4WD Lockup/Disable

Road test:
Drove for something over 500 miles with no problems. Have sought to get wheels to spin on gravel. Can not get the front axle to spin without the rear axle so looks like the problem may be...

Re: How to fill transmission fluid ?

Pull the fill plug and fill to the bottom of the fill plug hole (Eg "Fill to spill" as sometimes spoken - car should be on a level surface).
To get to the plug you need to remove the plastic...

Re: OEM brake pads question

I did not see the differential in front/rear brake pad wear that the Owner's Manual remarks on (eg the rear pads will wear faster than the front pads).
I like and use the NAPA AdaptiveOne pads. When...

Re: 4WD Lockup/Disable

Update: Removed the OEM Transfer Case/PTU. Installed another unit. (A salvage unit. Insoection of gears and seals etc. showed in in good condition.) Inspected the gears of the OEM unit through the...

Re: 4WD Lockup/Disable

Yes, consider the case where a non-full time 4WD is left engaged on dry, hard surface roads. The windup that occurs usually destroys the gears by gradually eating into them until they don't have...

Re: 2005 FEH Not Starting

The 12v battery closes a relay contactor to enable the HV battery to start the engine. If the 12v battery is too low then nothing happens. So first ensure that it is good.

Re: 4WD Lockup/Disable

I would not expect a shear pin in the driveline. So I think the gears have eaten through. Since the PTU does engage (ie when the propeller shaft is rotated the wheels turn) I think the damage is in...

Re: 4WD Lockup/Disable

Yes, propeller shaft goes from the transfer case to the rear axle (the power transfer unit).
So when you do that put the front axle on the ground and car in park. Rear axle up off the ground on...

Re: 4WD Lockup/Disable

Have followed troubleshooting guide in Shop manuals. Have concluded the wiring is intact & electrical components functioning as required. No shorts to ground & the controller & active torque coupling...

Re: 4WD Lockup/Disable

Observed the car from the side: when accelerating on snowy surface the front wheels slip & the rear wheels appear un-powered (eg no slip at all).
Then again lifted rear axle to jack stands. ...

Re: 4WD Lockup/Disable

Found lots & lots of fine metal flakes in the drained fluid. With car in park, rear wheels up & checking the tone rings I rotated the rear wheels. The propeller shaft would rotate. It shouldn't have...

Re: 4WD Lockup/Disable

Ah... yeah... still whatever is going on is kicking my behind...
My take on the lube level is that it was still high enough to keep the gears lubed.
More to follow...

Re: Water pumps

K, I replaced my engine water pump on spec when I had a lot of miles on it. You might look at the tensioner for the serpentine belt. If it was way too strong that could cause the seal to fail. Beyond...

Re: 2005 FEH experiencing high Rev and lack of horsepower at highway speed

I was just throwing that into the discussion because it does match the high revs part. A traditional problem area for permanent magnets was retention of magnetism. I recall the Ford advertising when...

Re: 4WD Lockup/Disable

I let it drain for several hours... Smelled bad, 'spose the balck is carbonization. Putting the lube thru a coffee filter to see what gives. This is actually the third time I will have changed the...

Re: 2005 FEH experiencing high Rev and lack of horsepower at highway speed

No, the rotor magnets are not electromagnets. Ford developed a high field strength permanenet magnet for the Escape.

Re: 4WD Lockup/Disable

Drained the transfer case lube. Black & very dirty looking. About half of the required 12 ozs. Curioulsy no indication of leakage, drippage, etc. Since this unit is just a set of gears I don't expect...

Re: 4WD Lockup/Disable

Appreciate it. I'll go see if there are any codes now, but there haven't been any for awhile. The symptom is when a wheel slips the 4wd disables... then comes back after no slippage for awhile. How...
