Re: Seen many HCH2's?

I see a Prius every other day or so - have only seen 1-2 new Civics, both non-hybrid.

But then again, in a state with 1/2 million people, I don't see many other cars, period (and 1/2 of those are...

Re: High pitched squeaking noise after FAS into reboot

There's definitely a starter motor on the '06 - I heard it and felt it a few weeks ago when the temperature had dipped to well below zero F. You can tell because the engine turns over several times,...

Re: autostop and temperature

It's not just the AS that's increasing your mpg - from my experience so far (driving between -15F and 50F) there's about a 2 mpg difference for every 10F difference. This is independent of AS, as I...

Re: Spring is coming!!!

I arrive at work about 5-10 minutes before the end of the prior shift (~7 am) and in the winter I walk past more than a few running cars with no one in them - people stick their remote car starters...

Re: Spring is coming!!!

Our warmest morning in nearly 2 months (35F) helped me get 51.1 mpg coming into work today, a personal best (unaided by wind); I've been as low as 42 mpg when the temps have been around -10F.

Re: New Driving Technique

I have a hill like that too - the problem is, it's 5.0 miles to go over it, 7.8 to go around it, and the math doesn't work out in favor of the longer route as far as the total amount of gas used. Too...

Re: New Driving Technique

I've never been able to go *up* a hill without the meter dropping to about 25-35 mpg (even when I let my speed drop). How do you handle those?

Re: Gas Mileage down? - Spring is coming

Any chance we're getting a break-in advantage due to the cold? Maybe a 'subzero cylinder hone' or a better bearing break-in that might lead to easier rolling during warm weather?

Just dreaming -...

Re: Gas Mileage down? - Spring is coming

Yeah, I'm *so* looking forward to that - at least we've gone from -10F last week up to 15F this week.

I've been logging my morning commutes, and it looks like about a 2 mpg change for every 10F -...

Re: Solution to the MPG fixation

Easier said than done, when your goal is to achieve (at least) EPA figures and you're driving 150 miles into a gusty 30 mph headwind at 3 degrees above 0F (hello Soleil24 in Quebec!).

I know, I...

Re: Gas Mileage down? - Spring is coming

I've 'hypermiled' (51-52 mpg) the last couple of tanks at 25F with some really sticky ice tires (Michelin X-Ice), so I'm really looking forward to seeing what I can do with summer tires and warmer...

Re: Part I found in the trunk?

Hi Jean-Francois,

I'll look for you and your strakes while I'm visiting Montreal this weekend - just in time for a return to some real winter weather, huh? Whatever happens, I think I'll take my...

Well, not just you - count me in as another engineer in the 'Less is More' camp.

Glad you're enjoying the car.

Re: lurch when braking

Point taken. Do you think the 'lurch' is when the friction brakes start to take hold, or when the regen stops, or something else?

Anyway, I was talking about stomping on the brakes so hard that...

Re: lurch when braking

I don't know about dangerous - the only time it does this 'mode shifting' between regen braking and friction braking is when you're decelerating relatively slowly. I'm sure that if you really stomp...

Re: auto-stop vs. idling (don't shoot me)

Thanks - I agree with all that you said, and I'll keep keying off (except maybe on those sub-zero days).

As far as synthetic oil, I have a '96 Pathfinder with 220k miles that's only had its...

Re: Q: Does very cold weather affect your MPG and/or hybrid's mechanics?

It hasn't been a very cold winter here - I've only driven the car in sub-zero weather on two occasions since I got it on 06-Jan - but I'll pass on my observations thus far (for the record:...

Re: auto-stop vs. idling (don't shoot me)

Mark,

Informative, well-written post - thanks.

Now, re this:

Does it go beyond just contaminating the oil? I mean, what's bad for the oil is probably bad for the engine, right? The reason...

Re: IMA limited when Hot or Cold

I *do* remember now that the manual seemed kind of fuzzy on that point; I'll have to check later.

On the bright side, yesterday is considered the coldest day of the year around here (average of 8...

Re: IMA limited when Hot or Cold

Larry,

Are you sure about this? I agree that you don't get any regen for a few minutes when it's cold, but I get plenty of assist right from the start - down to -5F, at least.

Re: Evolution of MPG function of Use?

I wish! No, I just check out a weather site (like wunderground.com), where they give a 3-times-an-hour history of things like wind speed and direction, temp, etc.

It's also a good way to get an...

Re: Evolution of MPG function of Use?

Just to add another data point - earlier this week I drove to work with the temperature hovering around 0F. The roads were clear, I had a 4 mph headwind, and a 200ft climb over 33 miles. I got...
