Re: age old question: HCH vs. Prius

As the happy owner of both a HCH (I) and Prius (II), my experience suggests that you will be quite happy with either car. My gas mileage observations:

- On our short trips (10-15 minutes) to...

Re: Arm rest replacement for 2004 hybrid?

> Have you tried a local junkyard?

What a great suggestion. The little plastic latch thingy on my center console armrest broke in half, and resisted my attempts at superglue. I read this...

Re: 2005 Civic Hybrid Fuel Mileage

mskibinski (your name is fun to try to pronounce) - If you are going from a 21 mile commute at 55 MPH, to a 5 mile city commute, then going from 45 MPG to 36 MPG is not all that unusual, and possibly...

Re: 2005 Civic Hybrid Fuel Mileage

The first things to check are probably:

- tire inflation (has it changed since Colorado) could make a difference
- air conditioning (are you using it now in Michigan) could make a difference
-...

Re: Picking up an 03 HCH CVT tomorrow!

That is so true. Not only am I noticing people going slower, but they are doing it in their sedans and compacts, rather than monster SUVs and pickups. The vehicular composition of traffic has...

Re: Average age of Hybrid owners = 55 yrs old?!?

The study may be full of beans, but I would point out a couple things:

- The average age here is highly skewed by the fact that mainly the computer-savvy participate regularly in forums on the...

Re: Normal driver MPGs

In my opinion, 60-65 MPH is the optimal balance of driving for fuel savings, and not driving the other motorists mad. If you continue to drive at those speeds, you should see MPGs around 50 or...

Re: Normal driver MPGs

As a follow-on to the previous comment: bear in mind that what is important is not your raw MPG, but your relative MPG.

Your relative MPG is what you are getting in the hybrid, compared with what...

Re: Normal driver MPGs

In my opinion, the primary determinant of MPG is your commute (your typical trip length). If it is very short, e.g. 5 miles, with a lot of stops, then you will struggle to get much more than 40 MPG....

Re: Phony mileage claims....

What a crackup! So mileage estimates over in Europe are off, just like with the EPA numbers here in the US. I guess it's pretty much a universal malady... "Steve Fowler, editor of What Car?, said:...

Re: See the (Before) & (After) Pics of HCH II Lower Spoilers:

I like the URL of the cleanmpg site in the tinted portion at the top of the front windshield. I think it's a good advertisement for the possibility that people can have a fine looking car with some...

Re: NOW IS THE TIME TO BUY AN SUV.......

This is why I appreciate the Consumer Reports evaluation of MPG numbers for all cars. They found that something like 95% of the automobiles got below the EPA estimates. Across the board, they showed...

Re: Bicycle Rack

Interesting. We are about to get rid of our Sienna, and purchasing a more fuel-efficient car like a TCH or another HCH, and using racks to carry the bikes around. We will get worse mileage in the new...

Re: Consumer Reports weblog comments

Before you get too dejected, and before you give up entirely on the TCH, consider:

1. If you get the TCH, it will get better mileage on your short city commute than the non-hybrid Camry. It just...

Re: Are you following the World Cup 2006?

That depends on if they call fouls or not!

Come to think of it, I've played against a number of big galoot-like defenders that probably would fall into the "hummer" category. It's nothing that a...

I think my favorite is the take-off on the car dealership salesman, where the guy at the gas station says with a smile to the SUV couple, "What's it going to take me to get you to fill up your tank...

Re: what mpg should I be getting?

My rule of thumb is a conservative rough estimate for highway mileage that goes something like this:

- if you drive <= 55 MPH, you will get 60 MPG
- if you drive <= 65 MPH, you will get 50 MPG...

Re: The Hybrid Payoff (Road & Track article)

At the end of the day, the only opinion that really matters must come from 'outsiders'. You don't ask the already-converted what their opinion is on a matter -- you ask some reasonable person on the...

Re: 17" wheels on HCH II?

There are a few threads on this elsewhere; I will give you my summary. I replaced my wheels with reasonably lightweight 17" rims, on which I put a non-LRR tire (215/40R17).

This change coincided...

No kidding. I live on a similar hill, with similar results; it doesn't help that there are stop lights and stop signs on the way up and down the hill.

Ironically, there is in fact a way for me to...

Re: Safer Drivers?

In general I agree that we hybrid folk are safer drivers. However, there are a few things about trying to maximize your MPG which result in me being less safe than I used to be, including:

-...

I have nothing but loathing and disgust, however, for the tobacco companies who have...
