oil consumption

Hi, I have a 2008 CHB and it uses alot of oil. I dont see any leaks and dont see any oil on the ground. Ive search some on google and see a lot of folks have this issue. Does anyone here have the same issues and is there a fix for it? It seems about every thousand miles I have to had almost 2 qts of oil. I use Moble 5000 5w20.

Two quarts per 1000 miles seems like way too much. I've not had to add any oil over 2500 miles.

Re: oil consumption

That seems excessive. Honestly I don't know enough about these particular cars to say if it is normal or not. Maybe get out at night and have someone ride behind you and see if they see smoke coming out as you drive? If smoke comes out at ilde and goes away after you "get on it", it is a valve seal problem. If it is steady or gets worse as you accelerate, it is rings or a combination of both (if I remember correctly).

Could be valve seals? It is possible.... But, probably unlikely that you have a bottom end (ring) problem. Not sure of the procedure for a compression check and leak-down test on this particular engine. It can't be too different from others. If it really is a ring problem, the "back yard way" to check is to check your blow-by with the engine running. Carefully try and remove the oil cap with the engine running and see if a lot of air is coming out of the crank case. If so, it is a ring problem.

Ours is about to hit 138,000 miles and uses about 1/2 quart in 7,500 miles. No where near what you are describing. If it is a problem, this is the first time I have heard about it. I always wind up topping it off before the oil change comes. I use Mobil 1 0/20 in winter and 5/20 in the summer. FWIW....

I actually came to this car from Several Mercedes Diesels. I would consider what you mention normal in those cars. Radically different engines and drive trains though.

At what point is it considered excessive? If you are worried about checking the oil before you drive the car.... I would consider that excessive.

Re: oil consumption

adding 1/2 qrt per 1500 miles was considered normal, but that was before they came up with new, tight engines. From this on, who knows.
mine take about half a qrt for 3 000 miles. I am ok with this. the only engine that does not take any oil we ever had is wife's RX300 3.0L. does not even burn oil. I pull easy 12 000 miles on it before oil change (Amsoil).
Asian engines are all like this. but his is really bad. blow by burn out somewhere, usually, valve stem seals.

hey, pull your plugs out, and check if they are fouled with oil, esp around threads. if so, you have plug well seals leaking. That's, fortunately, is easy fix.

Re: oil consumption

Here is what it says in the 2012 TCH manual:

"n Engine oil consumption
l
The amount of engine oil consumed depends on the oil viscosity, the
quality of the oil and the way the vehicle is driven.

l
More oil is consumed under driving conditions such as high speeds and
frequent acceleration and deceleration.

l
A new engine consumes more oil.

l
When judging the amount of oil consumption, keep in mind that the oil
may have become diluted, making it difficult to judge the true level accurately.

l
Oil consumption: Max. 1.1 qt./600 miles (0.9 Imp. qt./600 miles, 1.0 L/
1000 km)

l
If your vehicle consumes more than 1.1 qt. (1.0 L, 0.9 Imp. qt.) every 600 miles (1000 km), contact your Toyota dealer."

Re: oil consumption

wow.... they must really have it wrong with those engines then. that's a high "official" consumption.

Re: oil consumption

sorry, I read that manual again and again. that's just wrong. 1.1 qrt per 600 miles? my pick up truck takes 1/2 qrt per 2500 miles or so. if not less. and that's GM product, with GM telling you in 6 page letter that piston slap is "normal". wth happened to Toyota?
