Very interesting, thanks. I didn't know this was in the works.

I can't find anything on Toyota's US site, but their Europe site has this page:

http://www.toyota-europe.com/own/accessories/ipod.aspx

They have a PDF and a movie posted there as well, but neither really add much to the discussion. I'd love to know more, especially screen shots of any integration with the NAV screen.

Re: Toyota iPod Integration Kit??

I called a couple dealers in the Chicago area. Not surprisingly, none knew anything about this (though one did remind me that you can simply plug-in an iPod to the AUX jack).

I also called Toyota Customer Service and pointed him to the TUAW website. He came back after a while and said he didn't have any information about it.

It's odd that of all the blog postings about this that you can find by searching Google, I haven't found one that links to an actual Toyota press release or similar official confirmation.

Apple has a press event tomorrow relating to iPods. This story wouldn't be the focus of that event, but it may get mentioned.

One of my first questions is whether this adapter will force drivers to choose between Sirius and iPod.

Here is a better link, with pictures... the cost is pounds, but it seems that the car itself is a North American type {left hand driver setting}

Thanks. I have to say, I'm not optimistic about this being available in the US any time soon.

First, as you note, the price in the apparently quoted press release talks about the cost in Sterling. I was encouraged by the sites who were reporting this as a $300 option, but I bet they were just doubling the pound to approximate the current dollar-pound exchange rate. The reference to VAT is certainly irrelevant to a US-destined release.

Second, the press release refers to the Aygo, which I believe is not due in the US until 2008.

Third, the reference to "LCVs" seems like a Euro reference to me.

Last, I say "installation," but the release says "fitting."

I'll keep my fingers crossed, but I think this release is for UK. We'll have to wait in the US.

"Most" of these things work by emulating a CD changer so they (Toyota) can get maximum compatibility with as many models as possible.

What that probably means is you'd get song next/previous, folder next/previous, and if you're lucky artist/song title (using CD text emulation).

I suspect if you look at what a CD does with your current radio (whether that be a Nav unit, or the regular radio), that will pretty much be what the kit gives you. It would be great if the NAV screen displayed a list of all your songs and you could just touch the one you want, but it's just not going to happen.

Still, being able to skip songs, etc., with the steering wheel controls is pretty easy, and if you are organized with keeping your songs in logical folders it would be pretty nice!

Edit:
Does the Toyota unit actually gain you anything over the Vais unit? The Vais is $299, and at least you know what you will get, plus it's already out. It doesn't have the interesting glove box thing, I guess.
Go about halfway down this page and you will see the display for a Camry Navigation system. Looks good actually. Has Folder name, track name, artist name and album name.

Edit #2:
Well, this is interesting. That Vais unit also bypasses the "I agree" nag screen on the nav system. Isn't that cool!
The real neat version will be the iPod/XM combo, the SLXI. Not sure when it's going to be out though....

Re: Toyota iPod Integration Kit??

Been a very long time since I've been on this site, but I am interested in this ipod integration. I did some reasearch, and it appears that the product may be manufactured and/or marketed by http://www.scosche.com/products/sfID1/151/sfID2/159 ...... there is a very innformative video, and it seems it is available for under $200. Googling it seems to get prices closer to $150.. Anyone have any experience with this product?

I have been using a belkin ipod power adaptor..works great, but I would now like to get the ipod into the glove box and not have to turn it on each time i get in the car.

Re: Toyota iPod Integration Kit??

When I took the nav system out of the dash a few weeks ago to install the satellite radio in my 2008 TCH, I noticed something odd about the "aux input" jack. From the outside, it looks like a normal stereo jack that you might use to plug in a small (headphone size) stereo cable. But, from behind, it looked to have about 8 wires connected to it. I didn't spend a lot of time looking at that detail, because I was focused on installing the satellite radio kit correctly. It looks to me like it might be set up for some sort of data interface. I wouldn't be surprised if it set up, electronically, for a usb port or something like that.

Re: Toyota iPod Integration Kit??

The aux jack has 4 used wires, left, right ground, and something called ADPG. I think the function of the last wire is simpler than that. You'll notice you can't select AUX if there is nothing plugged into the jack. I think they use the ADPG wire, shorted to ground, to "turn on" the aux input when you stick in a plug.

One thing I have been curious on. I note in the scosche video he mentions that you will have sat 1 and sat 2 if you connect up their interface as well as satellite radio. Since there is only one plug back on the back of the Nav, I've never been clear how you would do that. I note the scosche interface shows a picture of two plugs, the familiar 12 pin plug that goes in the back of the Nav, and another wider plug. The wider plug actually is on the XM tuner, though is unused. Makes me wonder if you "loop" the scosche interface through the XM tuner. Only thing that would suck about that a bit is the fact the XM tuner is in your trunk.

Later!

Edit:
Ah, answered my own question. They ship with a Y cable, so you can connect both the scosche and the XM to the Nav. Very cool!

Is there anything out there that turns on your iPod when you start the car to allow control of playback (play-pause)? Maybe I miss read some of these posts....sorry if this is a repeated or dumb question.

I don't really need to control so it so much as it I want it plugged into a charger and able to have it start playing when the car starts and stop playing when the car is shut off.
