This theory does not apply to the Ford Escape Hybrid though...
Since they come with a specialty tire as original equipment on delivery.

I have every indication that these are 80,000 mile tires, maybe more.

My dad (who's worked at a car dealership since he was like 17 says Ford, GM, etc request the OEM tires to have a softer compound than the regular model. It makes the ride softer and improves the "grip" feel making the car easier to sell.

Very true since these are LRR they have a harder compound. I was just commenting on the posters earlier experience.
