Oil Changes

Re: Oil Changes
Our dealership's parts department always stocks Honda's 0W20, at $8.76CAN, sometimes a bit less. It's actually cheaper than anything else I've seen locally, which so far is a very short list: Pennzoil 0W20.

Re: Oil Changes
I do the oil myself. Back in '04 when I took it for its last dealer service, it as $34.95 for partial synthetic 0w20.
I use full synthetic 0w20, about $20 ($4/qt) and a stanard filter ($6). I bought 100 crush washers from a honda dealer for $5.
I think I do OK.

Re: Oil Changes
I just got my '03 oil changed at the dealer, as usual.
This time they charged $52.95, including $8.25/quart for the oil.
While the car was there they did state inspection and a software update.
As I see it, considering the savings on service in other areas, esp. brakes and exhaust, with this car, I don't mind paying extra to have a well-trained mechanice service it.

Re: Oil Changes
I walked into Advance Auto the other day for an unrelated part (lawn tractor battery). Discovered they were selling 5 Qt of Mobile 1 Full synthetic 0W20 and Filter for 29.95 so I jumped on it for my next change. After a $60 change at the dealer last time, it makes sense.
By the way, I do not think there is any such thing as non-synthetic 0W20. Anyway, Honda dealer assured me that their oil was full synthetic when I changed oil.

Re: Oil Changes
I bought my 04 Civic Hybrid a few weeks ago. The dealer told me to ONLY use synthetic oil with the hybrid or it would ruin the car. It costs $54.95 at the dealership. He said I could get the oil change done elsewhere but to make sure they ONLY used synthetic. I haven't looked up any threads on this, but just thought I would share what they told me. Not sure if it's true.

Re: Oil Changes
Yes, use the synthetic. I just got an oil change for my o4 in Los Angeles at an independent honda repair shop i've used for years and it was $40 including tax and disposal fees. The dealers in this area are $50-60.

Re: Oil Changes
I did the same as Charles at Advance Auto a few times over. Walked away with 20 quarts Mobil 1 OW20 and 4 Mobil 1 oil filters for $120. In hind sight, I'll need a couple more filters to make the math work out for our 3.5 quart changes, but I was happy.
I think AA moved on to another special with Castrol now, but the Mobil 1 deal comes back every now and then.
