The hills I travel between the freeway exit and my house, becuase I have yet to avoid a single red in my 60 or so days living there, is roughly 35-40 MPH. It would be dumb to go faster since I'll catch the next red. Basically, once I read 40 I ease off the gas and glide to the next red.
While on the freeway itself, I hit the hills at full speed (55-70 MPH). Since I'm not on a constant incline (just a series of ups and downs and some steeper than others) I am able to maintain minimum 50 MPG up the slopes and much better down the slopes. I'm not on 63 miles for this tank of gas and am seeing my improvements with 58 MPG on the odometer. That'll go away today when I make a commute to my wife's boss house for dinner but my goal is no longer x miles per gallon but the-absolute-best-I-can-do-given-my-circumstances. I'm seeing I can do pretty good when I spend the time to experiment with what works and not.
Generally speaking, a light foot, a good controls of P&G, and a strong humility to leave everyone else alone on the road will be all you need to maximize FE in this car. Its #3 that is the hardest. Everyone wants to show off or win the rev'ing race. But I don't care, really, I'd rather maximize FE.
