Default My next Honda Hybrid

Honda FCX

I'm in line for the 2010 version of this car. It will include a hydrogen cracker that sits in the garage and converts natural gas into hydrogen.

Here is some information about the car

Here is the press release announcement

I can hardly wait!

There's no MSRP Come 2010, if I can get one for maybe $40k, I'll sign up now. But if it's $200k (like, say, a Tesla Roadster), then I'm afraid I'll have to pass.

I wonder what a hydrogen cracker would do to your home owner's insurance? H2 is a rather dangerous substance to have floating around the house. Does the H2 cracker produce liquid H2 or just gas? Liquid H2 would need to bleed off if stored.

Nah, Prii are more boxy looking. Besides, painting this in high-gloss black and putting a red swishy light under the hood would certainly make KITT jealous

Contrary to popular belief, that's not entirely true. As an undergrad I spent a couple of years working on hydrogen ICEs, and particularly developing an experimental fuel system. Despite its ease of ignition, hydrogen gas diffuses like mad. An explosion would require a whole lot of gas actively stored in a confined place (a tank emptying into a room rapidly, perhaps). But proper ventillation minimizes the risk of a small to moderate leak. Even better, hydrogen gas detectors are realatively cheap and easy to get. They work much like smoke detectors, alarming to levels of gas well below that which is required to ignite. That sort of thing could alert the homeowner, alert the authorities via the same kind of security system that many people have today, and even shut down the cracker.

Here's an example

It is my understanding that there are a few of these out already leased out (to individuals) at $500 per month. Isn’t that like an $80,000 car?

WOW!! I guess I may need to win the lottery first!

That's an awful lot to spend to save money...
