Fuel gauge reading incorrectly...

Fuel gauge reading incorrectly...
Recently, any time I get below 1/3 of a tank, it's anybody's guess as to how much fuel is left... I've got 7 tickmarks on the fuel gauge, then instantly it's 3... then 5... then 1, then none, then 2....
I know the fuel sender is basically a potentiometer... so, if broken itd be showing empty or full tank... not bouncing all over. Of course, my honda certified warranty doesn't include the fuel tank/sender as part of the drivetrain, and the technicians say a software or computer problem is **** near impossible.
So, I'd think to check connections and possibly the mounting of the sender in the fuel tank... maybe when it gets to a certain level it's free to move a bit, being no longer constrained by the float?
Anyone else ever seen their gauge go wack-a-doo?
