I don't think you are supposed to tow anything with the HCH...check your owners manual to be sure though.

I am quite positive that you will void the warranty should you decide equip the vehicle for towing. Honda has been quite explicit and relentless about this issue.

Sorry;

You're not supposed to.

There is a "hidden hitch" that a member has installed for a bike rack.

I think the HCHII should be able to tow something.

The load capacity is 850 lbs or something close to that.

Does it matter if the load is in the cabin or following close behind?

I think it's worthy of discussion.

I might even exceed capacity at risk of less battery life if the alternative is to trade-in for a bigger, less-FE SUV type vehicle.

I actually would like to have a hitch to transport bikes in the rear.

However, I personally know the owner of a white 2005 HCH-1 who had the CVT warranty voided when she took the car in for service. According to her, she was told that the mere presence of the towing hardware are grounds for the voiding since there was no way to determine if the vehicle had been "mis-used" or not. Unfortunately for her, not too long after that, she developed a CVT lurch problem and had to pay for the entire costs. She still has her VIN flagged whichever dealership she goes to.
The Hitch was installed by Canadian Tire and the outfit has apparently been told by Honda to advise Honda hybrid owners of the possible warranty consequences should they install similar hardware.

Cheers;

Doesn't look like anyone's done it here.

Searching cites mostly CVT-worries.

Still I don't know the difference between the CVT pulling 850 pounds in the cabin or behind the trunk.

From HybridCars.com:
Can you tow with a hybrid?
...
Toyota and Honda will say not to tow anything behind their hybrids. Except for the Insight, which has an aluminum frame, it’s done everyday. Prius and Civic Hybrid can tow with a tongue weight of less than 100 lbs and total trailer under 1000 lbs. (Just basic guidance; be careful.)

The Ford Escape Hybrid and Lexus RX 400h have towing capacities of 1,000 pounds and 3,500 pounds respectively.

From http://www.cleangreencar.co.nz/page/faq-civic#Q13
Can I tow with the Civic Hybrid?
The Civic Hybrid is able to tow, in the same way a non-hybrid Civic can tow; nothing heavy. Some people have fitted with tow bars to their Civic Hybrid's but this is normally only to put a bike rack on or tow a small utility trailer. Although they are not designed for towing heavy loads they still have plenty of power under normal driving conditions. Anyhow with the money you are saving on petrol from owning a Civic Hybrid you will be able to pay for a hire-ute on those occasions you need to carry a heavy load.

But I admit it is a risk. Sorry to say.

Maybe you bike can tow the HCHII?!?!

Good luck.

I'd say the only option would be a detachable roof rack for 2 or 3 bikes, and other equipment (skis, kayak, canoe, etc). It's removable so they can't actually see that you have attached a towing device to your vehicle and possibly void the warranty. If you're trying to tow dirt bikes, jet skis, and other heavier (but not heavy like a boat or trailer) items that need a hitch, the HCH can handle them, but you take the risk of voiding the warranty. You can always get another person to help put a jet ski on the roof rack

Has anyone tried this?? I don't have a jet ski, but even if I did I wouldn't risk the damage to my car and jet ski. It seems like a dangerous trick.

I think he was joking. I think my roof rack has a weight limit of 115 pounds or there abouts. 115 pounds happens pretty fast when you're loading 45 pound DH bikes...

Etrailer is where you get the hitch:
http://www.etrailer.com/productdetai...rfrom=2006&h=e

Our owners manual (2006)
States on page 159:
Load Limits
The maximum load for your vehicle
is 850 lbs (385 kg) for U.S.A, 395 kg
for Canada. This figure includes the
total weight of all occupants, cargo,
and accessories, and the tongue load
if you are towing a trailer.

& on page 175
Towing a trailer
Your vehicle is not designed to tow a
trailer; Attempting to do so can void
your warranties.
