Keeping A/C pump off when in Defrost

Re: Keeping A/C pump off when in Defrost
Several years ago traveling through a long construction zone in AR on a HOT summer day, August, my engine coolant began to overheat. It didn't take long to discover that one of the two radiator fans had failed and I could do okay with the A/C off and the windows down.
100F+ humidity in the 90's.....
It occurred to me that if I could run the A/C more efficiently....
So I turned the A/C to MAXIMUM cooling, that closes the BLEND door completely, and then used the blower speed to regulate the cabin cooling level. The cold, COLD, airflow coming from the vents was a bit discomforting but we were able to drive all the way home to Seattle that way.
What is needed is a way to BLEND the passenger cabin airflow with the CHILLED airflow existing the A/C evaporator in order to moderate the coolness of the system airflow coming form the dash outlets.
