Default Replacing the cd changer?

I just purchased a used 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid and I'm loving driving it. But I'm a bit disappointed that the stock audio system cannot play MP3 CDs and doesn't have an aux input (I have the navigation system with the 6 cd changer under the seat). It's also annoying that the changer cannot shuffle between disks, and forgets what it has already played when shuffling and the car is powered down, but those aren't really big deals -- I just want to be able to at least play all the CDs I have somehow.

I've been wondering if just replacing the cd changer with an aftermarket model with more features would solve my concerns. Anyone have any experience or advice in doing such a thing? I've seen mention of those PIE converters, but mostly for hooking up an ipod or satellite radio. Does anyone know of a converter/changer combination that would fit under the seat and be compatible with the controls in the nav system? (I've also sent an email to PIE tech support asking them for advice.)

Thanks!

Try reading through https://www.greenhybrid.com/discuss/...g-thread-8320/ There are a number of different solutions that people came up with.

I've read through most of that. I didn't see much of anything about actually replacing the cd changer -- just how to hook up an accessory like an ipod. Forgive me if I missed a relevant post.

Yes, I would like to change/upgrade to a different CD changer as well (to add MP3 capabilities, ipod interface etc..).

However, I would like to RETAIN all the system readout like fuel consumption, hybrid/battery modes, is this possible?

How about the 08 or 09 models? Can our 06/07 Nav radios be upgraded to 08/9 models? Do those later models have the aforementioned extra features?

I believe the 08/09 Nav radios are made by Pioneer whereas our 05-07 Nav radios are the Visteon crap that is crippled on many levels.

I remember reading a doc somewhere that said the new nav radios are not backwards compatible with the older cars ... of course, Im sure someone out there can figure out a hack to make it work...

The 09 Nav audio system is different that the 08. It appears that it's made by Sony according to the user manual for the Nav system.

Yes our iPod interface will retain all the functions and also retain the looks of everyting in the car.
