shutting off at idle

Re: shutting off at idle
Let me break it down step by step for those that still have questions to what exactly is taking place.
1. Start up in ICE
2. Vehicle switches to EV
3. Vehicle runs in EV for approx 30 seconds then dies. (no warning lights)
4. Restart vehicle with key. car is driven at 20 mph through parking lot of complex.
5. Stop to turn onto main street still in EV only. dies at stop. restart with key. Again no warning light.
6. Turn onto main street. at 40 mph ICE starts and vehicle behaves as normal for the rest of the day.
So there is a problem in the system somewhere. I believe it is mostly likely a software issue in the ECU. I am going to be looking for a more hybrid savvy dealership in my area. There aren't to many FEH around here in spite of the fact that demographically we are somewhere around #5 in the country for vehicle sales.
Brady. That was a typo, my Mustang was a 1987, my first new car!

Your FEH has a problem and if the GM took it for a test ride and it happen to him, he should have got it fixed. In order to sale Hybrids, a dealer MUST have a certified hybrid Tech to work on them. Many dealerships are owned by one that has many locations. They move their cars around to get higher prices where demand is better. It could be your dealership does not have a certified tech, and the sales staff has little to no trainning in hybrids.
As I stated before, if the Tech is certified, he or she can call the Ford Hotline to talk to trainned hybrid specialists to instruct the dealer tech what to do. This happen when my PCM went crazy and my FEH had to be towed to the closes dealership by roadside assistance. They allow me to watch as the Tech repaired my FEH, but the first thing he did was call the Ford Hotline for instructions. They instructed the Tech to reprogram my PCM and my FEH has been fine ever since.
On my repair order, there was a hotline repair number that the next tech would be able to research in their computer system if I have additional problems in the future.
Hope this helps.

Re: shutting off at idle
I've read this thread from start to finish all in one sitting.
This had me laughing out-loud at many points.
Many knowledgeable people trying to help... and one owner well... unable... or unwilling to communicate, nor answer simple yes or no questions.
IMHO Jerry&Natalie STILL have not described any sort of problem, and do not need any help other than learning how their very new, and very different car behaves.

Re: shutting off at idle
Have you tried driving in only "L" or switching between "L" and "D" to perhaps exercise different portions of the software? [just "grasping at straws"...I agree with the PCM re-flash idea...maybe switching from L to D to L would confirm the diagnosis]

Re: shutting off at idle
Actually this reminds me of the Sales Manager who was driving my MMH. He took it down to service because it kept "stalling out" The Service guy had been trained and told him, "thats what its supposed to do!"

Re: shutting off at idle
Jerry,
when it dies, do you lose all power? (like the displays and such?)
From what you are describing, it sounds like its a temperature issue, and once the vehicle warms up, its fine for the rest of the day.
If this is the case, just double check the switch on the battery pack under the carpet in the rear. If it is just slightly off, if might exhibit this. That or there is a loose connection somewhere...

Re: shutting off at idle
Sounds like a battery or battery management issue to me. Possibly when the battery runs down the "ICE On" trigger is not occuring like it is supposed to. Sounds like the ICE is only coming on when the key is turned or when the power/acceleration demands exceed the system MAX. When running in EV, it sounds like the system is not reconizing the low battery threshhold and signalling ICE to come on to charge it....instead it is running down to zero...or nearly zero.
I bet a PCM flash corrects this problem.

Re: shutting off at idle
Thanks Tim, confirms what I have been thinking. Anyone have the Ford hotline number handy? I need to find a hybrid savvy dealer in my area. I'm moving to Utah soon and I want this resolved before then. I don't want any issues on the roadtrip since Natalie will be driving the FEH.

Here is a list of Hybrid Certified Dealers near you.
Freedom Ford (727) 793-6359
Walker Ford (727) 450-4266
Karl Flammer Ford (727) 937-5131
Autoway Ford (866) 687-4794
Bill Currie Ford (888) 864-6691
All of these Dealerships are within 20 miles of Clearwater.
More than likely you brought your vehicle to one of these Dealerships, but these are listed as Hybrid Certified on the Ford Website. Bill Currie Ford is a big Dealership I've been to in the past, so you might try them.
