Is it possible to steer the haybrid vehicle with engine switched off?

Default Is it possible to steer the haybrid vehicle with engine switched off?

I was wonderting if it is possible to steer the hybrid while engine is switched off totally (No key in the ignition) . since the power steering uses a 42 volt electrical power assist?

Default yes

its all driven electrically PS, AC, PB the only belt driven system is the water pump. Yes I have proven this...steers stops etc with the engine OFF not in hybrid off but as in 0 rpm OFF.

So if the vehicle shuts down for some reason while you are going down a slope. you wont be able to steer it manually??

Default the engine WILL shut down going downhill....

if you are going under 30 mph. engine on or off makes no difference EVERYTHING works normally. If you PURPOSELY turnd the engine off with the key, all you would lose is the power assist, it would still steer and stop although you would notice that it takes more effort with the power assist off.

In that case the steering will lock, an anti-theft measure. Why would you want to do that?

Thanks for your clarification,
so it works like any normal vehicle when the engine is off, but you need to use more power to brake and steer correct?
I had the impression since it is based on electical assist, it won't even steer when with the batter power and engine power were off.
So if the computer goes bust for some reaosn while dirving, and teh car shuts down, you will still be able to steer and stop the vehicle with no electrical or ICE power right?

Default eggzactly.....

its a normal vehicle with technology added to make it more efficient. It works like any car....but if you took the key out the wheel would lock and you would be going what ever direction it was locked at...this is also the same as any vehicle with a steering integrate lock

I am used to driving a mechinical vehicle where if the engine goes off or shuts down, it is normal to steer the vehicle and stop it. it is very safe, and uses less technology.
but since I am switching to a high tech vehicle (hybrid), I am trying to asses the safety behind this technology, and how the system works in case of power faillure(electrical power and ICE)
I have read a lot about brake issues, where the hybrid doesnt; stop, and now I was wondering, if everythign is on electricity (brake assist, power steering assist,..etc) I am just trying to find out how safe is this vehicle is if for some reaosn the power goes off while driving.
and Jet, you are kind enough to answer all my questions Thanks a lot

I just don't want to buy a high tech vehicle that might cause me a lot of headache, specially that I don't live in the US

Jet,
what I meant by saying "taking the key out of ignition" was to emphasize on the vehicle doesn't have any power at all (ICE nor electrical), not that I am going take the key out while driving the vehicle. that would be a disaster lol
I should have clarified it more sorry about that

To further clarify, the car is NOT steer-by-wire or brake-by-wire, which would not work in a total power loss. The steering wheel is still mechanically connected to the rack and pinion. The brake pedal still presses a master cylinder that is still hydraulically connected to the slave cylinders at all four corners.
No one has tried mass-producing a steer-by-wire car. Brake-by-wire was a disaster tried by Mercedes.
