Default 03 HCH 1 Record Tank @ 241,000 Miles

I knew it was going to be a good tank when I had over 300 miles with well over a half tank left.

But whooda thunk that with over 240K miles and a weak IMA system I would still be getting such spectacular mileage.

But here it is, 751 miles on a single tank of gas at an average estimated 59.8 MPG per the display.

Again, best car I have ever owned. Hands down.

By the way the codes indicated by the CEL and the IMA light are P1600, P1449, P0420 and P1420. Voltage deviation in the IMA cells and catalytic converter codes. I've been driving this way for over 75,000 miles now.

Aiming for 300,000 miles....

Now, go fill 'er up! It's runnin' on fumes.

So, do you like the '10 Insight as much as the '03 HCH?

So no problems with driving with the bad cat converter? My 03 HCH has a 146k on it and the upper cat recently went bad. My IMA light has been on since 88k. I'm not inclined to put in the money on replacing either if not necessary. There does seem to be some mild performance issues with the cat going bad - occasionally some "hitching" or "hiccuping".

Excellent for sure. Great FE. Are you getting those numbers on country roads or mostly in town. I am getting great results with my 2006 HCH. Just completed a 2800 kilometer road trip and arrived home at 4.3 ltr's per 100 kil. H

The Civic is the workhorse and actually gets better mileage, especially on the interstate at 65+ MPH, but the Insight is definitely more pleasurable to drive because it's newer if for no other reason.

No performance issues that I notice. The only problem is the annual state inspection. I can keep the IMA/CEL from setting by minimizing IMA usage (keep it in 4th gear, avoid hills) and this year I was able to keep the catalyst from setting the CEL by driving at high RPM's until the monitors came ready. It's a pain but I'm also inclined to not put money into the car if I don't have to. I do pull my EGR valve a couple times a year and clean it with carb cleaner and also use fuel injector cleaner once in a while.

Probably 85% of the miles are either country roads (55MPH) or interstate (65MPH). I'm lucky in that I don't do a lot of urban driving and when forced to often turn the car off at red lights if autostop doesn't kick in. Sitting at a light idling just doesn't feel right to me anymore...

Apparently, additives are hard on cats.! Maybe you may want to save money and stop this practice? H

You might be right, but in my case I started adding the fuel injection cleaner very recently and the carb cleaner only goes on the removed EGR valve.

I have replaced the cat twice on the Civic. The first time was under warranty at about 45,000 miles if I recall correctly, and the second was on my dime at about 135,000. Both times were long before I used any additives. The second one only lasted about 25-30K before the CEL started coming on again. That's why I won't replace it again.

When I first got the car I paid close attention to the instantaneous mileage display and quickly figured out the best mileage was gained by getting to high gear as quickly as possible and running at low rpm's. I have driven this way since.

I personally suspect the reason the emissions system reports errors is the result of the low rpm's I consistently run at. I am generally running at 1500-2000 rpm and rarely go above 2500, with the exceptions being when I am going up a steep incline or getting on the interstate and these are both short duration events. I think the exhaust gases just aren't pushed through at the expected nominal rate. This would explain why I can bring my catalyst monitor ready by running at higher than normal rpm's.

That's just a guess, but I'm convinced that's what's going on. I'd be curious if others with the 2003-2005 HCH with manual transmission and run at low rpm's are having similar issues.

My 2006 HCH runs at those figures. 1500 - 2000 rpm. I believe the early HCH hybrids wit M/T had more cat problems . Probably the CVT in the newer hybrids may help the cats live longer? H

I was thinking the same thing. And maybe Honda tweaked the software to accept a higher reading from the O2 sensors in later models.
