MPG Loss When Startup

MPG Loss When Startup
Greetings,
I have been noticing that when I turn off the ignition of my new '06 HCH-II, that the MPG reads (for trip B, my current tank) something like 53.9 MPG. But when I start the car up a few hours later (for lunch or to go home) it says something like 49.1 MPG.
Does starting the car make that big of a difference? Is there a good explanation for this?
Thanks,
Shawn

Re: MPG Loss When Startup
It may just be that when you restart, your trip MPG has updated. The reading you have when you shutdown isn't up to date, as the mileage in Hondas seems to refresh every couple minutes as opposed to several second intervals in the Prius. I know that in the Insight you can press the "FCD" button to manually update your mileage. You may be able to get an instant update by hitting the trip button to cycle through your displays until you get back to the one you started at. If you do that when you shutdown, then the mileage should match what it reads when you start up again.

It would only make that big a difference on my car within the first mile or two of resetting the button. There are huge swings it takes until it gets some miles in there to average everything out.
