Congrats to all those mastering how to maximize FE in their new vehicles...

I have to mention that I hit 712.7 miles on a tank (just today) before needing to refuel! Those last few miles were a little nervous; no fuel bars on the gas guage!

712 miles, how many gallons did it take and do you
fill to the very top?

Actually, the car's been parked. I plan to fill up tonight. I hope it has enough fuel to get to the station! (.3 miles.)

I will report back later with the info you asked for. I have read here that some have added up to an additional 1.5 gallons of fuel after the first click. The most I am comfortable going is .5 to .8 gallons after the first click. I have never filled until fuel came up to the top of the filler neck.

For my first 8 tanks I filled up to the filler neck (fuel visible). There were NO problems in doing this. It took 1.8 gallons after first click almost every time. I now put in one gallon past first click... not because I'm worried about any ill effects... but because it takes too long going to 1.8 (click, click, click!) and it is possible to spill some fuel. If you're going for a tank record 1.8 is just fine, though!

1st click was 11.5 gallons. Filled to 12.65 gallons. 713 miles = over 56 MPG measured at the pump.

Those of you not willing to learn the limits of your cars are missing out on some fabulous records. EZ2beGreen - You can get 800 miles on that tank if you want. If you only put in 12.65 gal at 713 miles then you EASILY could make it to 800 miles. I have put in 14 gal to the tank (STILL not flowing out of the filler neck but definitely was getting close) so I now know that I can go 80-100 miles PAST when the last fuel block disappears from the fuel gauge. I have done this 3 times already and even when filling up there is another gallon still in the tank (i.e. don't fill in more than 12-13 gal). I end up filling it a little early because the next day will be more than 100 miles of driving and I don't want to stop during the day so I fill up the night before.

But test the limits of your car and you will be setting some amazing distances on your tanks. I've been getting mediocre FE lately in the 46 mpg range and still get almost 600 miles to a tank so those getting 51 mpg already have a 12 gal*5 mpg or 60 extra miles on me and if *I* can go another 100 miles at 46 mpg then *YOU* can go another 100 miles at 51 mpg and hit 800 miles per tank for us.

You think that's nerve-wracking, try drving into Big Bend National Park in BFE Texas with 0 bars. I found myself praying there was a gas station in the middle of the desert National Park. Luckily, there is one.

I know that might seem like no big deal to many of you, but driving the rolling freeways in San Diego, it is hard to keep the FE high. Plus, I am still breaking my new car in. I am still under 2000 miles. I parked it at work earlier this morning and noticed that I had driven 538 miles...and I still have 4 little gas squares left!!!

I am having fun learning all kinds of stuff from all of you here, and have passed on the website to many of my friends. I am still learning, but I have started to master some of the big hills I have to drive up during my work commute.

Thank!!!

Just an update to this tank...

I was happy when I hit 500 miles on the tank...but was even happier when it was finally time to fill up and saw that I had driven 648 miles!!! Probably could have gone a little further, but I was getting nervous with no gas bars...yikes!

This is a truly awesome car!!!

Good job but how many gallons did you put INTO the tank when you filled? I've put in 14.xx gallons so if you put in 13.5 or so then you were definitely close to empty but if you put in only 12 gallons then you had room to spare. The fuel bars go out WAY early (as a safety measure I'm sure) but now you are in the 650-mile club.
