Two more years have elapsed. Those numbers are only higher.

I believe it's a relatively safe assumption that the ~80% of folks that never replaced their batteries don't come to this or any other forum. They have no reason to pursue it. This is not a high-traffic forum. They just drive their car like any other enjoying it working normally, but they will eventually replace their packs if they keep the car on the road long enough.

What is known is that Panasonic doesn't make those cells anymore, and the quality from the new supplier is dramatically reduced, hence the very high replacement rates of the newer models. All the more reason to avoid Honda replacement packs and go with Bumblebee or Hybrid ReVolt. While they both use Chinese cells, they test them extensively before use and offer up to 3 year warranties on their packs for about $2,100.

The battery is a wear item. Period. It will have to be replaced at some point to keep the car running at specification. It's a matter of time/miles/conditions.

Working in your favor is that you likely have a pack full of the original Panasonic cells. Working against you is the low mileage and its adverse impact on pack balance.
Thanks again. So I think the best bet is to negotiate a good price on this car then set $2000 aside as a "hybrid" fund. I guess best case I'll have to do it at 80k miles in 2020. Here's to hoping!

I'll keep the grid charger in mind and keep an eye out for recal on the dash.

Both myself and my mechanic noticed a rough idle when coasting at 5mph immediately after auto-stop, which means (because it didn't cross 8mph) it keeps chugging along at around 600rpm. Mechanic thinks it's PCM flash to fix. I'm not as sure.?

Good plan. I'll be amazed if you make it 14 years on that pack though.

Both of mine exhibit rough idle you describe from time to time and always have. It seems worse in the summer months. To my knowledge, both are fully updated unless it's fairly recent.

Thanks! In the end I bought the car 2006 with 27k miles for $9500 so a bit of a premium over KBB. Drove it 250 miles since purchase and trip computer shows 47mpg without trying to hypermile. So seems pretty healthy.

Needs to do Engine coolant maybe in the next year and CVT flush. Oil was changed as part of the car sale but was done by a JEEP dealer so I think I'll redo it sometime soon using my favorite 0W-20 (Pennzoil Ultra Platinum).

Hypermiling in a hybrid is a whole 'nother beast.

Good luck!
