Default VW Diesel convert

After three years of ups and downs (many, many downs...Google VW HPFP for one) with my Jetta Sportwagen TDI, I converted to hybrid, buying a 2012 Civic Hybrid last week.
Past experience with outstanding Honda reliability was the main reason for choosing the Civic. They are gas, go, and never worry about cars, VW's are not, in my experience. One positive aspect of the TDI is you forget you are drive a car capable of 50mpg (I averaged 42); the Civic constantly reminds me, I knew that before I bought it though. On that note, I am so far disappointed in my mileage, only getting 36-37 mpg at 600 mi; same conditions and driving style as TDI. Hopefully this is due to needing break-in and the effect of heavy AC use in the tiny engine.
I'm an engineer and pilot and consider fuel economy to be as interesting as a fast lap time. I look forward to constructively participating in the forum.

current cars:
2012 HCH TW
2011 Nissan Murano (wifes)
2008 Civic Si (SCCA Solo II toy)

recent past cars:
2010 VW Jetta Sportwagen TDI DSG
2006 Saab 92x Aero
2004 BMW 325i
2001 Prelude

I never come in below 50 mpg with my 2006 HCH2. Man you must be very heavy with your right foot. When are people going to slow down. Always off to the races! Slow done and smell the roses as they say, relax and enjoy the day!!! H

I'm pretty familiar with driving styles that maximize mpg; I got 45-50 in my TDI regularly and lifetime average of 42 with 75% city/25% hwy. Not the highest possible, but very good for that car. I didn't expect to have to impede traffic to get the EPA rating in my HCH. Again, I believe it's due to the effect of heavy AC use on this particular car and not quite broken-in engine.

I use A/C all the time! It is important to keep the pack from heating.I have lots of trips near 80 mpg US. You will never get those #'s driving above the speed limits.I get 50 mpg at or near the speed limits. On hills I never get near the speed limit and I don't impede traffic even when you know they are going no where in a hurry!!! I am retired, so why rush things? H

I agree, most folks with TDI's don't play around. They seem to be in a rush most times. I would love to drive a TDI just to see what kind of #'s they can pull in? H
