The Toyota Prius has been voted 2005 Car of the Year by the 58 members of the European Car of the Year Jury. After 2 rounds of voting, the car was chosen from a list of 7 finalists and declared clear winner after gathering 406 points.

Tadashi Arashima, President and CEO of Toyota Motor Marketing Europe said: "We are absolutely delighted to receive the 2005 Car of the Year award for Prius. We believe that hybrid technology, in particular as implemented in the Prius with our revolutionary Hybrid Synergy Drive® system, represents a big step forward in reducing the environmental impact of automobiles, while at the same time enhancing driving performance. We are proud and honored that Prius has been endorsed so strongly by the prestigious group of journalists who make up the Car of the Year jury. This is a major milestone in the acceptance of the hybrid powertrain and the recognition of its potential to become a mainstream technology. It is also a great encouragement to us in our work on developing more environmentally friendly vehicles."

Hi Jason:

___Apparently, those that actually pay for what they drive do not have the same thoughts in regards to the Prius II as the 58 European auto journalists?

Toyota predicts Prius sales will double
In Europe, Toyota sold 4,872 Prius in the first eight months of 2004, equal to 98 per cent of its initial annual sales objective of 5,000, Athanasopoulous said.
Toyota revised its 2004 overall sales target in Europe to "over 900,000 units" from 860,000 units, up from 835,000 units in 2003.
___Hybrids in Europe simply don’t sell given the premium gasoline costs over and above diesel and the availability of diesels that receive as good or better fuel economy then hybrids.

___Good Luck

A while ago I remember reading somewhere the following, and I paraphrase:

Europe doesn't do hybrids and America doesn't do diesels.
