Default Totally happy with new video card!

I doubt much of anyone around here will care but I've just got to say how pleased I am with my new 7800 GT. The system had a 6800 card in it to begin with. The 6800 was ok but I was honestly a bit dissapointed with it. I had hoped to be able to turn up game options most or all the way up with the 6800 card but most settings needed to be in the medium range to play smooth. Normally I'd wait a couple of years before up grading but between my wanting the new card and a friend wanting the old one I got the 7800. The 7800 is what I expected the 6800 to be. I can run full res with anti-aliasing and all options maxed on FarCry and on Call of Duty 2 and the games still play silky smooth.

Personally I thing the GTX is over priced but at $280.00 the GT was cheaper than the 6800 was!

Enjoy while you can. In a few months it will be a dog.

Well that's good to hear. I'm still using an old 6600 (non-GT), although the only game I play is Battlefield 2 at 1280x960 and medium details. I'm probably going to build something new this spring and had been looking at the 7800GT. Glad to hear you're very pleased with it!

I'm not too much into PC games but last month I saw DOOM3 at Sam's for $9.00 so I got it. (I've played the other DOOM games to death)

My only desktop is a 600Mhz Celeron 128MB win98 machine so I didn't even try it there.

My fastest machine is a 2.7GHZ 1MB Toshiba notebook which I've been playing on, but sadly I have to play with the lowest graphics setting.
(Even then it's not completely smooth)
I could turn off part of the graphics (Bump and Specular maps) but don't want to do that.

Oh! How I'd love to play that with a kick butt graphics card!

Update,

My buddie Vince came over last night and started playing Call of Duty 2 with all the settings maxed out. He was playing when I went to bed and then I remember seeing him leave thru the curtains.... When I woke up I was surprized to find him in the office still playing, he couldn't stop. My room has mini-blinds not curtains so I evidently dreamed that he left but in fact he played for 10 hours straight.

I'm thrilled to finally own hardware that can run full resolution with the settings cranked.

BTW: Doom 3 is an Open GL title. nVidia cards run Open GL games much, much better than ATI cards. If Doom 3 is you thing you should look into a nVidia card. My old 6800 played Doom 3 very well.

BTW 2: When I say that the card runs with the settings maxed out I'm talking about all the settings you can find inside the game. If you go directly to the card's driver software there are some further options you can turn on like transparency aa. The 7800 card will bog down if you turn some of these advanced settings up all the way.
