On the flip side to that there are many car owners that are completely impatient and don't yield the right away to pedestrians when they are supposed to. An example would be when coming out of a grocery store. In front of the grocery store I go to it is clearly marked 'yield to pedestrians coming out of store'. It also has a stop sign just before the entrance. I can't tell you how many times I've seen drivers just not pay attention or are in too much of a hurry and almost hit someone.

Anyway, I'm not discounting what you said...just adding that the pendulum swings both ways.

From an article about a Japanese electric car. I'm not sure how I would feel about the sound.

Japanese consumers who test drove the car were impressed by its quietness. But the car comes equipped with the clip-clop sound of horse hooves hitting the pavement to alert pedestrians and other drivers.

In a parking lot, I play my radio with windows down. I've nearly hit people and nearly been hit by vehicles backing out.
