Looks like a reasonable solution . . . solution . . . solution . . . solution. However, I understand it doesn't have regenerative braking, yet.

Bob,
GE is working on a 6 5/8" diameter version that will have regen and sustained charging capabilities.

Excellent. That will give a significant range improvement, especially for delivery vans.

Does it also handle reverse? One of the least fuel efficient modes is having to negotiate up to a loading dock or area. This is always low speeds that would be the perfect profile for this unit even in its current form.

Bob,
EXCELLENT question! NO! For safety reasons we disable the electric motor whenever the brakes are depressed or the vehicle is in reverse. Additionally, wiring the motor for reverse operation would be slightly more complicated and (require a reversing contactor). There is no reason why we couldn't operate in reverse, we just choose "not to" as it was simpler, and the overall amount of savings versus cost and complexity might not be viable for most users.

BTW: Our dyno testing indicates a 26% economy gain, we just like to be conservative in the press. Plus, as our knowledge increases we find ways of improving the system... I believe we will be at 30% in the not too distant future, but at the current point every % improvement becomes harder and harder... Plus, I don't believe any of the drive cycles have a reverse operation test! Good point - why don't they?!
