I'm not too sure about the conditions in Tenn. but here in Phoenix, you have to watch out so that you don't turn the steering wheel unless the car is moving. During the summer, the asphalt can be hot enough that the twisting of the tire can actually cause damage, like a tread separation.
There's an old joke that goes:
Q. Can you really fry an egg on the sidewalk in Phoenix?
A. Not without a class D restaurant license.
(I didn't say it was a _good_ joke)
Alternatively, damage can be done to a tire by running over debris in the road, hitting a curb too hard, or even a manufacturing defect. I've lost tires on sharp rocks. but then I have _weird_ job.
Just as a point of information, how many miles did you have on the tires?
Tires are like shoes, sometimes you don't really know where you 'stepped in the dog poo' until you smell it. :-^)

I try not to turn when stopped.
The original Bridgestones went 30,000+ before the noise got really loud.
The dealer refused to rotate them at 32,000+.
I replaced them at 33,333 on the odometer.
The new Michelins are smooth and the TCH is silent once more.
I suppose a pothole could have taken out the alignment and a tire at once.
Nashville interstates are crater zones year-round.
